TARIFA. A special touch was required to close such an important festival as the FCAT has become over its five-year history. As guest and special presenter of the closing ceremony, the actor Irene Visedo, hippy daughter of the TV family los Alcántara, spoke not only in recognition of the success of the festival but also to underline that African cinema deserves to explode on big screens throughout the world.

Gastronomic metaphors served to open the palette and relate how the event was elaborated. Irena Visedo revealed the secrets of great cuisine: the ingredients, the preparation, the final results and the creators- a well prepared kitchen assistant, and a creative chef. The assistant was Javier Mohedano, councillor for Culture, and the chef was Mane Cisneros, FCAT director.

Mohedano continued the metaphor in his speech, declaring that “the festival has now transcended the level of tapas bar, and has become an haute cuisine restaurant”. Mane Cisneros took over from her kitchen assistant to once again demand a space for African cinema: “The work we carry out in Tarifa is in defense of African filmmakers”. The message was none other than to claim the rightful place for those genuises of the celluloide who happen to have the disadvantage of being born in Africa.

In Tarifa it has been proven that the voice of hope comes from films. In Tarifa the festival continues to lay foundations which command that, according to its director, “to love this cinema one must go beyond art”. In Tarifa the projection rooms closed their doors on Sunday, but a new appointment was set: from the 1st till the 10th of May 2009, Tarifa will host the VIth FCAT African Film Festival.
